AOK - The Gesundheitskasse

For more than 130 years, the AOK has stood for safety and comprehensive medical care in the event of illness. The AOK community insures more than 27 million people - almost a third of the population. With an insured share of around 50 percent among those in need of care, it is also the largest long-term care insurance fund in Germany.

The eleven AOKs are legally independent. Six of them extend to one federal state, five AOKs are responsible for several federal states as a result of mergers between 2006 and 2012. The AOKs are corporations under public law and are subject to the supervision of the federal states in which they have their headquarters.

The great strength of the AOK is its regional roots. It is committed locally to high-quality, economical and nationwide care for its policyholders. With more than 1,200 locations, the AOK is present for its customers nationwide. Innovative care management for chronically ill insured persons, digital solutions for better networking of the players in the health care system, regional commitment to good medical care in rural areas and competent care advice in the area - these are just a few of the topics for which the AOK community stands.
